Equity for Equality

Cal Poly SCE is committed to making great engineers for the future, but we cannot do that if the communities that we serve are filled with social injustice. The recent events have once again brought to light the inequality that this country has faced since its founding. We cannot be apathetic while many are living in oppression. This is the time to get informed and take a stand.

Now more than ever, the engineering community cannot shy away from this reality. We are committed to making structural change beyond our buildings, bridges, and roads. Engineers cannot solve injustice alone, but we are individually responsible for the bias and privilege that we bring to the table. Cal Poly SCE fully supports the black community by offering our allyship and support for this protest for human rights. As engineers, we all have an ethical responsibility to take part in the ongoing conversation to break down our personal biases towards race, injustice, prejudice, and more.

Engineers have the ability to affect and change society, so we have the responsibility to create a society that values and treats everyone fairly and equitably. The ASCE Code of Ethics, Canon 8 states:

“Engineers shall, in all matters related to their profession, treat all persons fairly and encourage equitable participation without regard to gender or gender identity, race, national origin, ethnicity, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability, political affiliation, or family, marital, or economic status.” [ASCE Code of Ethics]

With that in mind, we urge you to vote, share, converse, learn, donate, call, email, petition, and support in any way you possibly can to bring about systemic change. We have attached some resources that we feel are a good start.
